Effective Math Instructions must be supported by an inclusive, positive, and safe learning

environment, where students feel valued and engaged.

  • It begins when educators have high expectations of students and believe that all students have the potential to learn and do math.

  • It uses culturally relevant practices and differentiated learning experiences to meet individual students’ learning needs.

  • It focuses on the development of conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, skill development, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • It involves educators choosing from and using a variety of high-impact instructional practices.

(Hattie, 2009; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2014)

The thoughtful use of high-impact instructional practices – including knowing when to use them and how they might be combined to best support the achievement of specific math goals – is an essential component of effective math instruction.
